Diego Lugano joined Fenerbahce prior to the 2006-2007 season after a successful campaign with Brazilian side Sao Paolo FC. The Uruguayan-born defender won the Campeonato Paulista, America Libertadores Cup and the FIFA Club World Championship, granting Sao Paulo the team its third world title.
After earning a reputation as the best defender in South America, Lugano signed a four-year deal with Fenerbahce in 2006. His play for the Yellow Canaries has garnered attention throughout Europe, and he’s been a transfer target for top European clubs like Juventus since. At Fenerbahce, he has teamed up with fellow South Americans Roberto Carlos and Edu Dracena to form one of the top back lines in all of European football.
In addition to his successful play at Fenerbahce, Lugano is the team captain for his native Uruguay National Team. Lugano, who has Italian citizenship, is married and has two kids.
