Denizlispor Clinch Relegation Spot in Week 32Turkcell Super Lig • Author: Nathan Redd • Tuesday, May 4, 2010
There are just two weekends remaining in the Turkcell Süper Lig season, and the race for the championship is now guaranteed to come down to the final match of the season. Bursaspor and Fenerbahçe will have to wait until week 34 to see who lifts the trophy after both teams won this past weekend. Meanwhile, Denizlispor clinched a spot in Bank Asya 1. Lig for next season. Here is a look around the league following week 32:
The championship race is down to two teams, but the weekend results mean both will have to wait until the final whistle of the final match to see who is left standing. Fenerbahçe defeated Eskişehirspor to stay at the top of the table, but Bursaspor remain just a point behind the Canaries.
The Green Crocs scored twice in the first half, including a 37th-minute penalty, that allowed them to outlast Kayserispor 2-0 in Bursa. The win keeps Bursaspor just a point behind Fenerbahçe in the table with two matches left. However, Bursaspor have a scheduled date with Ankaraspor this weekend, who are now relegated. Therefore, Bursa receive an automatic three points as a result.
The upcoming weekend means Fener need to win to maintain their lead at the top. The Canaries are on the road in the nation's capital to take on Ankaragücü. Regardless of the match's result, the title race is guaranteed to go down to the final weekend as neither Fener nor Bursa can clinch the championship this weekend.
While the race at the top has two more weekends left, the relegation picture is becoming more clear. Denizlispor booked their spot in Bank Asya 1. Lig for next season after this past weekend. The Roosters beat Gençlerbirliği 2-0 in Denizli, but Sivasspor and Manisaspor both picked up points (Manisa by default). Even if Denizli won their final two matches, they would finish as one of the bottom three, and therefore will be relegated.
Joining the Roosters in Bank Asya 1. Lig next season will likely be Diyarbakırspor. They dropped a 3-1 decision to Beşiktaş over the weekend, including a 66th-minute own-goal that sealed their fate in the match. Diyarbakırspor have 27 points, but need two wins to finish the season, and earn a tie with Sivasspor. They hold the head-to-head advantage over Sivas and would remain in the league, with Sivasspor being relegated. If Sivas win either of their final two matches, Diyarbakırspor will join Denizli as the second relegated team.
Last year's runners-up are still clinging to life after claiming a point in a 1-1 draw with Kasımpaşa. Gökhan Güleç opened the scoring for the visitors in the 37th minute, but Sivas earned an equalizer nine minutes after the break and held on for the draw. With 32 points, they need just two points from their final two matches to stay in the Turkcell Süper Lig for next season. Sivasspor are on the road this weekend to take on Eskişehirspor.
