Sivasspor Looking For Victory to Ensure Süper Lig FateTurkcell Super Lig • Author: Nathan Redd • Friday, May 7, 2010
The Turkcell Süper Lig is down to the final two weekends, and there is still much to be decided. With two games left, the championship will come down to the final match next weekend. Also, one relegation spot is still yet to be decided, but Sivasspor can answer that question with a win this weekend. Here is a look around the league in week 33:
One game is on the schedule for Friday, as Beşiktaş host Manisaspor. After a good start in 2009, the Black Eagles have faltered in 2010 and can now finish no better than third in the league. Big changes are likely underway for the Eagles during the offseason, both on the pitch and within the administration. Kickoff for the match is set for 20:00 tonight from Istanbul.
All eyes will be on three matches this weekend, all of which can decide the fate of the champion and relegated teams. First up, Bursaspor will automatically earn three points this weekend due to a scheduled fixture with Ankaraspor, so the pressure shifts back to Fenerbahçe. Fans will be watching to see how the Canaries respond after their ouster from the Ziraat Turkish Cup on Wednesday. They'll be on the road this weekend in the nation's capital to take on Ankaragücü. That match is scheduled for Sunday at 20:00. A win keeps the Canaries a point up in the table with just one match remaining. Regardless of the outcome, the champion won't be decided until next weekend.
The other two high-profile matches this weekend focus on the bottom of the table. Denizlispor have already sealed their fate in Bank Asya 1. Lig for next season, and they'll likely be joined by Diyarbakırspor, but the southeastern Turkey side still have a glimmer of hope. For Diyarbakırspor to remain in the league, they need to win both of their final matches, and hope that Sivasspor either loses both of theirs, or earns only a draw from one of the two. If Sivasspor claims only one point from their final two, they'll be tied on points with Diyarbakırspor, but Diyarbakır hold the head-to-head advantage. Sivasspor can ensure their spot in the Turkcell Süper Lig with a win this weekend. They're on the road to take on a tough Eskişehirspor squad Sunday night. As mentioned, Diyarbakırspor need a win in their final two matches to survive and surpass Sivasspor. They are also on the road Sunday, taking on Kasımpaşa in Istanbul.
One match is scheduled for Monday to wrap up the weekend. Trabzonspor, fresh off their Ziraat Turkish Cup championship, will host the now-relegated Denizlispor Roosters in Trabzon. Trabzon Coach Şenol Güneş will likely use Monday's game as a glorified scrimmage, as it has little impact on the table. The Black Sea Storm can make more noise next weekend, however. They'll travel to Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium to take on Fenerbahçe for the second time in two weeks. This time the league title will be on the line.
